LGBTQ Dems Mourn the Loss of Mayor Justin Flippen

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 25, 2020
FLORIDA LGBTQ+ DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS MOURNS THE LOSS OF MAYOR JUSTIN FLIPPEN
WILTON MANORS, FL – Mayor Justin Flippen suffered a major heart attack and died this evening. He was a city commissioner and mayor in Wilton Manors, serving as mayor of Florida’s first-LGBTQ city commission. He was a past president of the Dolphin Democrats, the Broward county chapter of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus.

Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus President Stephen Gaskill issued the following statement on the news of Mayor Flippen’s death:

“We are all shocked and deeply saddened by the sudden death of our dear friend, Wilton Manors Mayor Justin Flippen. He was a charismatic and dynamic leader, full of energy and facing a future of unlimited potential. From his time with the Broward Young Democrats and the Dolphin Democrats, through his tenure as an elected official, Justin retained his optimistic outlook.

“Justin was a lifelong LGBTQ activist and effective leader who found his calling in public service, most recently serving as mayor of the first all-LGBTQ city commission in Florida. He will be missed by so many people whose lives he touched, and his legacy will live on forever. The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus sends our condolences to Justin’s family, his constituents and colleagues.”

State lawmaker under fire for using anti-gay slur

WPBF: State Rep Al Jacquet made the comment about political opponent Omari Hardy

LAKE WORTH, Fla.A local state lawmaker is under fire after using a homophobic slur directed at a political opponent.

Representative Al Jacquet made the comment during a video he posted on social media.

The video touches on multiple topics before Jacquet turns to the upcoming primary and his opponent, Lake Worth Beach Commissioner Omari Hardy.

“I hear they got sleepy Hardy!” Jacquet said. “That’s all good. That’s their union boy, their (expletive), union boy.”

Hardy said he heard about the video and then made it a point to watch it.

“I was disappointed,” Hardy said. “I was appalled, and I was offended.”

Hardy is not gay, though he was raised by two moms.

“I was offended for them,” he said. “I was offended for the broader LGBTQ community here in Palm Beach County and across the state.”

Leaders in the local LGBTQ community were also offended.

By coincidence, the LGBTQ Democratic caucus had a scheduled meeting Tuesday night at the Compass LGBQT Community Center in Lake Worth Beach.

Jacquet’s comments were not on the agenda, but they were what people were talking about.

“It’s very hurtful when an elected official uses slurs to refer to the LGBQT community,” said caucus president Kevin Muth, adding he was extremely upset by the comments. “Words matter.”

Compass Executive Director Julie Seaver added she was appalled by the comments.

“It doesn’t matter what the slur is: racial, misogynistic, homophobic,” Seaver said. “He’s not representing all of his constituents.”

Jacquet has not made a public comment since the video was posted, but he did issue a statement.

“In the heat of the moment, I said something I should not have said. I apologize for my words that have offended some of my colleagues.”

Critics have pointed out that the apology does not mention Hardy nor does it mention the LGBTQ community.

“I’m not looking for an apology to me,” Hardy said. “He needs to apologize to the LGBTQ community.”

“We’re not going to take this anymore,” Seaver said. “We’re tired of giving people passes for a statement made on the fly.”

The Palm Beach County Human Rights Council has called on the Florida House of Representatives to censure Jacquet or remove him from office.

Statement on Rep. Al Jacquet’s Use of Anti-Gay Slur

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 18, 2020
STATEMENT OF FLORIDA LGBTQ+ DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS ON REP. AL JACQUET’S USE OF AN ANTI-GAY SLUR
TALLAHASSEE, FL – State Rep. Al Jacquet (district 88) posted a video on Facebook in which he used an anti-gay slur to describe his opponentStephen Gaskill, president of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement:
“State Rep. Jacquet should know better. Language matters, and has a real world impact. Rep. Jacquet needs to apologize to Florida’s LGBTQ community for using an anti-gay slur intended to demean a large segment of his Palm Beach County constituents.

“The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus is in Tallahassee for our annual Lobby Days, and we encourage him to meet with us while we’re here. Or he could meet with our Palm Beach County chapter, the Rusty Gordon LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, right there at home. Rep. Jacquet needs to hear directly that anti-gay language is never acceptable.”

LGBTQ Dems Call on Legislature to Pass Statewide Protections

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 27, 2020

FLORIDA LGBTQ+ DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS CALLS ON LEGISLATURE TO PASS STATEWIDE PROTECTIONS FOR LGBTQ COMMUNITY

DELRAY BEACH, FL – Today at the state Capitol in Tallahassee, advocates are pushing for statewide protections for LGBTQ Floridians in light of several blatantly discriminatory bills that were recently filed.

Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus President Stephen Gaskill issued the following statement on the anti-LGBTQ legislation and need for statewide protections:

“No matter how Republican lawmakers try to spin the impact of the discriminatory legislation they recently filed, the bills are a direct attack on every LGBTQ Floridian – and prove the need for statewide protections. Our community is their go-to election year punching bag when it’s time to win votes and curry favor with the radical Religious Right. Today we stand with the openly-LGBTQ members of the Florida legislature who are fighting back against this discriminatory legislation and pressing forward on the protections we need.”

Caucus Statement on the Anti-LGBTQ Legislation Proposed by Republican Lawmakers in Tallahassee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 16, 2020
FLORIDA LGBTQ+ DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS STATEMENT ON THE ANTI-LGBTQ LEGISLATION PROPOSED BY REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS IN TALLAHASSEE
DELRAY BEACH FL – Republican legislators in Tallahassee have filed several draconian anti-LGBTQ bills to be considered this session. Press reports indicate that HB 1365 would make it a felony for doctors to change the sex of a minor; HB 305 would repeal local employment anti-discrimination protections due to sexual orientation and gender identity; CS/HB3 would repeal local ordinances protecting LGBTQ youth from so-called “conversion therapy” and block local governments from enacting future bans; and HB 537 would allow conversion therapy if it’s practiced in a home.
Stephen Gaskill, president of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement on the anti-LGBTQ legislation:
“The Florida Legislature never disappoints when it comes to pushing an anti-LGBTQ agenda. Despite the progress the LGBTQ community has made, despite the presence of openly-LGBTQ elected officials and staff in Tallahassee, and despite the basic level of decency required to serve the public, Florida Republicans continue to pursue dangerous and discriminatory policies aiming to harm LGBTQ Floridians. How can these Republican elected officials explain to their constituents why this is their top priority this session? The answer is they can’t, because these bills are disconnected from reality. The members of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus stand ready to combat this blatantly discriminatory legislation.”
