Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus Supports Impeachment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 18, 2019
DELRAY BEACH FL – The US House of Representatives today approved two articles of impeachment against President Trump. The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus has twice called for the impeachment of the president: in light of the numerous instances of obstruction of justice outlined in the Mueller Report, and as the case around Ukraine has unfolded.
Stephen Gaskill, president of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement on today’s House action to impeach President Trump:
“President Trump has betrayed both his oath of office and his commitment to the American people. His focus on using the office of the presidency for his own personal gain belies the trust Americans have in their president to do the right thing, regardless of their own political persuasion. The House vote supporting two articles of impeachment is a sad yet necessary action to ensure the future of our democracy. The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus stands in support of our brave and thoughtful Florida Representatives who voted to uphold the rule of law.”

We are all accountable for ensuring acceptance, raising awareness, and providing support for our community, and in that respect today is a reminder that we have failed.

Honoring Our LGBTQ+ Veterans

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 11, 2019
FLORIDA LGBTQ+ DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS ASKS FLORIDIANS TO HONOR OUR LGBTQ VETERANS
Stephen Gaskill, president of the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement on Veterans Day:
“As we honor those who served our country, we must pay special thanks to our LGBTQ veterans who served with distinction, and often under circumstances that could have ended their careers. We must ensure visibility and recognition for our LGBTQ veterans.
“Sadly, we do this at a time when the Trump administration is methodically trying to erase our transgender service members. Those who choose to serve in the military do so to fight for the American ideals of freedom and equality not only around the world, but also here at home. Thank you for your service, and know that the American people will always stand for equality.”

Coming out with our new name!

Today is the 31st anniversary of National Coming Out Day, a time to celebrate coming out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer. Coming out to family, friends and coworkers is how we’ve changed hearts and minds, and it’s how we’ve moved America closer and closer to full equality.
This weekend, we are taking part in the Florida Democratic Party 2019 State Convention and we’ve chosen this day – this moment – to officially announce the caucus’ new name: we are now the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus!
At our July Summer Conference in Tampa, the caucus membership voted to rename our organization from the Florida LGBTA Democratic Caucus to the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus. We added the Q+ to be inclusive of non-binary members of our community and those who identify as queer, while the plus also encompasses our straight allies who are so integral to advancing our rights. LGBTQ+ also brings our organization in line with national political and advocacy organizations.
With the name change comes a new brand. We modernized our logo and added black and brown stripes to the rainbow-wrapped Florida to represent LGBTQ+ Floridians of color and the fact that we are one, diverse community standing together in the fight for equality.
If you’re attending the Florida Democratic Party State Convention, please join us in sitting with the LGBTQ+ caucus delegation at the general sessions and at our business meeting at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday. Let’s keep working together to defeat Donald Trump and elect Democrats up and down the ballot in 2020!
