Join Capital Equality for Relay for Life Leon/Havana on May 14th!

For the second year in a row, Capital Equality will participate in this year’s Relay for Life Leon/Havana! At Relay for Life events, communities across the globe come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has already taken too much.

This year’s event will take place at Leon High School onSaturday, May 14, 2016. Last year, the Capital Equality team raised over $1,000, and we hope to do the same this year! If you’re interested in participating, please join our team or contribute towards our goal!

Cancer touches us all. Let’s work together to be a part of the solution! For more information, contact Team Captain Andy Janecek at andy@capitalequality.org.

Florida LGBTA Democratic Statement on Bisexual Health Awareness Month

Focusing on the unique needs and experiences of bisexual individuals, particularly youth, the Florida LGBTA Democratic Caucus joins with the Bisexual Resource Center in proclaiming March as Bisexual Health Awareness Month.

With the rate of suicide, substance abuse, bullying and other negative experiences higher than their gay, lesbian and straight peers, bisexuals also tend to be less likely to connect with community resources where they can find the assistance needed.

With that in mind, the Caucus joins with the bisexual community and their allies to raise awareness of these health issues and promote resources, actions and legislation to empower and enhance the health and well being of bisexual individuals.  We urge our members, supporters and friends to join us in these efforts and strive for the betterment of health, well being and understanding of bisexual Floridians.

Did you know? Florida is a closed primary state!

Florida is one of 12 states in the United States which uses a strict closed primary election process. If you plan to vote in a partisan primary election, you must be a registered voter in the party for which the primary is being held. This is why it is important to indicate your preferred party affiliation at the time you register.

What does this mean? If you plan to vote for Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders in the presidential primary election on March 15th, you must be registered as a Democrat! If you are not registered to vote as a Democrat, you will not be able to vote for Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders.

Take a moment today to check your voter registration status. If you are not registered to vote, or if you need to change your party affiliation, you must do so by no later than Tuesday, February 16th. For more information, contact the Leon County Supervisor of Elections office or your local Supervisor of Elections.
