Tonight

Before President Obama delivers his State of the Union address tonight, Vice President Biden sent this email to supporters:

Tonight, Barack will give a State of the Union address to the last Congress he'll serve with — and it's gonna be good.

You'll want to tune in.

Everything the President proposes tonight is ambitious, but doable — like two years of free community college for everyone who will go there and work hard, better high speed internet access for more Americans, making homeownership more accessible and affordable, and more of the things we've always wanted to achieve.

So keep this email on hand while you watch, and if you're feeling fired up to go make these things happen, just chip in:

I'll keep you updated — but I have to run. See you tonight,

Joe

DNC Chair Rep. Wasserman Schultz Statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day:

“Today we remember and celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Even today, on movie screens, his message still resonates and on the streets of our communities his example still leads us. I am proud that the Democratic Party carries on Dr. King's fights: to encourage equality of opportunity for all Americans, to guarantee that each voice is heard at the ballot box and to fight threats to the franchise, to combat poverty by supporting a living wage, and to ensure equal treatment under the law. This holiday is an opportunity to keep marching forward, committing ourselves to a Day of Service, and bringing us closer to realizing Dr. King's dream.”

An early picture of the Obamas

Before the First Lady’s birthday tomorrow, President Obama sent this email to supporters:

Every year, around Michelle's birthday, I like to think back on who we were when we first met and how far we've come together.

Here's a picture Michelle found from those early days:

Last year was Michelle's 50th birthday. And while we're keeping this year's birthday a little more low-key, there's one thing I'd like to ask for your help on that I know she always loves.

Help me out by leaving a little something for Michelle and signing her birthday card:

Thanks — I know she'll appreciate hearing from you.

DNC Chair Rep. Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on Today’s Jobs Report

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement on today’s jobs report:

“Today's jobs report confirms that 2014 was the strongest year of job growth since 1999. Contrary to Mitch McConnell's best effort, this is not the result of magical economic time travel, but the product of policies resulting in steady progress that has seen private sector jobs increase for the last fifty-eight consecutive months. While this news is encouraging and shows that President Obama has our country on the right path, we cannot allow the misplaced priorities of the Republican Congress to return us to the failed policies that contributed to the crisis in the first place.”

DNC Chair Rep. Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on the Retirement of Senator Barbara Boxer

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement on Barbara Boxer’s announcement that she will not seek re-election to the Senate in 2016:

“Senator Barbara Boxer’s announcement today that she will not seek reelection to the Senate in 2016 represents a tremendous loss for the people of California and the Democratic Party. On issues including the environment, gun safety, women’s health, and education, Senator Boxer has fought tirelessly for the issues that shape the lives of the people she represents, and she will certainly be missed in the halls of Congress. As Chair of the DNC, it has been part of my mission to encourage more young women to get involved in electoral politics, and I know that I would not be in the position to do so today without women like Barbara Boxer opening the doors through which we have followed.

“Though she’ll be leaving the Senate after this term, I know that Barbara Boxer is not yet done fighting for a progressive future that ensures opportunity for all Americans.”

DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on House Republicans Latest Vote to Dismantle the ACA

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement following House Republicans latest vote to dismantle the Affordable Care Act:

“Today, Republicans voted on a health care measure that manages to both increase the deficit and decrease the number of insured. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, making this move would cost one million people their health insurance through their employer and could even lead businesses to cut hours for workers.

“This legislation is antithetical to the goal of expanding access to affordable insurance, and undermines the progress already achieved under the Affordable Care Act. The benefits of health care reform have reached from young adults permitted to stay on their parents’ insurance, to seniors for whom the prescription drug donut hole is closing and the solvency of Medicare has been extended. Recently, we have seen the level of uninsured Americans at or near historic lows, while overall health care costs are rising at historically low rates.

“We are just days into the 114th Congress, and already Republicans have shown us everything we need to know about what to expect over the next two years. Yesterday, Mitch McConnell tried to credit 57 straight months of job growth to an election that occurred just nine weeks ago. Now, Republicans have prioritized legislation that would hurt working families and our nation’s fiscal strength for the sake of winning a talking point.

“Republicans have been given an opportunity to prove they can work with President Obama. For the sake of the American people, they need to stop squandering it.”

President Obama: “Let’s get to work.”

Yesterday, before President Obama arrived in Detroit to talk about the auto industry’s comeback, he sent this email to supporters explaining why he’s hitting the road this week:

Normally, a few weeks into January, I go before Congress to give a State of the Union and lay out a detailed agenda. I spend an hour or so talking about the things I hope that we can work together to achieve.

This year, I'm doing something different. I want to begin that conversation with people like you — because you're an essential part of whether or not we find success.

So, starting today, I'll be traveling to communities around the country to talk with folks like you about how we can continue to create good, fair-paying jobs and put a college education in reach for more of our young people.

Now, some items on this agenda will be actions that I can take myself, and I'll use my authority however I can to keep making our middle class stronger and to make sure hard-working Americans get what they deserve.

But there are some things where I'm going to need the cooperation of the new Congress that was just sworn in. That's also where I'm going to need you — I need you to make your voice heard.

So, are you with me?

http://my.democrats.org/Still-In-for-2015

I plan to make the most of these next two years. We have some serious challenges ahead, but I know we can keep doing big things together.

Let's get to work.

DNC Chair Rep. Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on the House Democratic Caucus Agenda

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement in support of the House Democratic caucus legislative agenda announced today:

“The Democratic caucus will fight to advance our country’s infrastructure, work to make sure corporations pay their fair share of taxes and are not rewarded for shipping American jobs overseas. We will introduce legislation to grow paychecks for hard working American families. We will work to ensure workers receive their fair share of compensation and stop CEOs from claiming additional tax deductions until their employees receive a much deserved raise. And we will continue to ensure that millions of Americans receive quality affordable health care.

“And what has the House GOP leadership promised the American people in the next few months? They have committed to looking out for big oil, gas, and coal companies, eliminating reforms that hold Wall Street’s big banks accountable, and repealing the Affordable Care Act, which would take away health care from millions of Americans.

“It is clear which party is behind the American people, committed to growing opportunity from the middle class, and fighting for those who are willing to work hard. And, it is crystal-clear which party is watching out for special interests. I am proud of our Democratic agenda, and look forward to the work we will do in the 114th Congress.”
