Today’s decision by the United States Supreme Court declaring the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional is a huge victory for married couples and their families. The Supreme Court affirmed that all loving and committed couples who marry deserve equal respect and treatment under the law.
The Court dismissed their case on California’s Proposition 8, making permanent a previous Federal District Court ruling that found Proposition 8 unconstitutional.
This is a great day for couples and families, but 37 states still treat gay and lesbian Americans and their children as unequal. While we celebrate today’s decision and those who now have the freedom to marry, tomorrow our community will continue fighting for full equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.
